Go Play Outside! PNW Toddler Edition

Getting outside with your family has numerous positive health benefits including better sleep, reduced behavioral issues, exercise, increased connection with each other and your natural world, building confidence, and learning through play. Getting outside when it gets dark at 3:30 pm, rains for three months straight, and its 40 degrees out can be challenging. It gets even more challenging when you are concerned about little ones staying safe and warm. You can (and should!) get the whole family outdoors year-round in most weather conditions if you have appropriate weather gear.

Joining a group like Hike it Baby can help you get started outdoors with your children. You don’t have to start scaling mountains or kayaking through rivers. You can get started by playing in your own yard every day and finding local walks/ hikes that are within your family’s skill/ comfort level.
The basics for adults also apply for children. You want to look for a waterproof external layer, fleece or wool internal, and a moisture wicking base layer, cotton or bamboo. I have complied a list below (NOT SPONSERED) of my favorite PNW toddler gear items that keep us outdoors year-round.
